BRINGING BENEFITS OF COMPETITION TO CONSUMERS

EMA tendered out 3% of Singapore's total electricity demand for the April - December 2010 period to the generation companies. This is equivalent to about 10% of the total households' load. The objective of the tender was to allow for greater competitive pricing for the benefit of households (see Chart 1).

The tender resulted in savings of 0.01 cents/kWh in the electricity tariff for October to December 2010 for households.

EMA has secured another tender for a load equivalent to about 3% to 4% of the total households’ load for the July 2011 to March 2012 period.

TARIFF FORMULA: AVERAGE FUEL OIL PRICE OVER 3 MONTHS

The electricity tariff formula helps to smoothen out any large swings in the fuel oil markets and will lead to electricity tariffs that are reflective of prevailing market conditions.

To achieve this, EMA uses the fuel oil price data over a three month period to set the tariff (see Chart 2).
