IEA Chief Economist outlines global energy landscape at 2nd Distinguished Speaker Programme

The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that natural gas will overtake coal as a fuel source by 2030 and account for 25 percent of the global energy mix by 2035. Dr Fatih Birol, Chief Economist of IEA, painted the positive outlook for natural gas against a backdrop of global uncertainties impacting the energy sector at the second instalment of the Energy Market Authority (EMA) Distinguished Speaker Programme.

 

Industry leaders and scientific luminaries to headline new solar PV event at SIEW 2011

The Energy Market Authority of Singapore (EMA) and the Asian Photovoltaic Industry Association (APVIA) today announced the addition of PV ASIA PACIFIC EXPO 2011, also known as APVIA (2011) PVAP EXPO, to the event line-up for the fourth annual Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW) that will take place from 31 October to 4 November 2011. The four-day solar expo which runs from 1 November to 4 November 2011 at the Sands Expo and Convention Center, Marina Bay Sands, will consist of an extensive exhibition running from the 2 to 4 November, as well as various programmes starting from the afternoon of the 1 November including keynote speeches by policy-makers, CEO Forum, Scientific Conference and Financial Dialogue with leading industry and scientific luminaries.

Boost Electricity Efficiency to Power Sustainable Economic Growth

A new platform for the energy world to debate and exchange best practices, ideas and strategies with global leaders and luminaries was launched by the Energy Market Authority (EMA) today. Tan Sri Leo Moggie, Chairman of Malaysia’s largest electricity utility company Tenaga Nasional Berhad, delivered the first public lecture as part of the inaugural EMA Distinguished Speaker Programme, where he underscored the critical role of the electricity industry in sustaining economic growth.

New Chief Executive at Energy Market Authority

Mr Lawrence Wong Shyun Tsai, 38, will step down as Chief Executive of Energy Market Authority (CE, EMA) on 1 April 2011. He will be leaving after nearly 14 years of excellent service in the public sector. Mr Chee Hong Tat, 37, will be appointed as CE, EMA with effect from 9 May 2011. In the interim, EMA’s Deputy Chief Executive, Mr Yeo Yek Seng will be Acting CE, EMA.

Company Fined $150,000 for Damaging Electricity Cable Which Resulted in Blackout

Soon Yong Trading Pte Ltd, an earthworks contractor, was fined $150,000 for damaging a 66kV high voltage electricity cable on 26 August 2010.  This disrupted electricity supply to areas in Bishan and Ang Mo Kio, as well as train services at thirteen MRT stations.

Singapore's Electric Vehicle Test-bed Taking Shape

The inter-agency Electric Vehicle (EV) Taskforce led by the Energy Market Authority (EMA) and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) has appointed Robert Bosch (SEA) Pte Ltd (“Bosch”) to design, develop, deploy, operate and maintain Singaporeā€Ÿs EV charging infrastructure as part of the EV test-bed programme. Bosch will be collaborating with local partners SingTel (on the communications interface) and Greenlots (on the charging network) to deliver a reliable and integrated infrastructure solution for EVs. Singapore will be the first location outside of Germany to test out this integrated EV charging infrastructure solution developed by Bosch.

Statement from EMA on Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Supply Contracts for Singapore

Media reports on 30 June 2010 quoted Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew as saying that Singapore will be building a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal to buy gas from Qatar and store it.  EMA has received several queries from the industry on this matter, and would like to clarify the context in which these remarks were made.
