Electric Vehicles (EVs) are increasingly being seen as a sustainable mode of transport by countries worldwide as they are more efficient than internal combustion engines (ICEs) and can help to reduce carbon emissions.
EV Test-Bedding Programme
EMA and LTA co-lead a multi-agency EV Taskforce to test-bed EVs and assess the benefits and feasibility of adopting EVs in Singapore.
On 25 June 2011, the EV Test-bed was launched as an open platform for companies interested in shaping the future of electrification of the transport system.
The test-bed seeks to achieve four main outcomes:
- To develop suitable infrastructure and business models
- To test the feasibility of EVs in Singapore
- To facilitate the evaluation of relevant policies
- To identify and develop related industry and R&D opportunities
The test-bed will operate till 2013.
Update on the EV Test-Bed and locations of charging stations
The test-bed was launched with five Mitsubishi i-MiEVs and four Daimler smart electric drive (ed) vehicles, as well as three outdoor and two indoor charging stations. The EV test-bed will be scaled up over time, with the charging infrastructure growing in tandem with the take-up rate of EVs in the test-bed.

“The EV test-bed is an excellent example of how Singapore presents itself as a ‘Living Laboratory’, in this case for EV manufacturers, charging solution providers and automotive component players, working closely with various stakeholders in both government and utilities sector. In meeting Singapore’s need for sustainable mobility solutions, we invite private sector players to partner us in the development and testing of innovative solutions.”
