Piped gas is a safe and convenient fuel when used properly. Like any other source of energy, gas can be hazardous if it is not used and treated with caution and care. Follow the safety instructions and tips given below and keep danger away. Stay safe!

Take immediate action upon detecting a gas leak

  • Turn off the gas control valve at the gas meter
  • Open all the windows and doors to ventilate the area
  • Extinguish any cigarettes or flames
  • Do not try to detect a gas leak with a naked flame
  • Do not switch on or off any electrical or light switch
  • Do not use a mobile phone in the area of gas leak
  • Leave the premises immediately if there is a strong smell of gas in the premises
  • Call City Gas 24-hour Hotline at Tel: 1800 752 1800 to report the gas leak

Engage only a licensed worker to perform piped gas service work

Gas pipe installation, maintenance and repair work should only be carried out by a licensed gas service worker. Similarly, the installation, repair, replacement and testing of a piped gas appliance should also be carried out only by a licensed gas service worker or a licensed gas service worker (restricted). The latter is not allowed to carry out gas pipe installation work but only permitted to install, repair, replace and test piped gas appliances.

A licensed gas service worker or licensed gas service worker (restricted) will have a card licence issued by the Energy Market Authority (EMA) which shows an EMA logo, a licence number, a photograph of the person and the validity date of the licence.

To check whether a person is a licensed gas service worker or licensed gas service worker (restricted), contact the EMA by calling 6835 8075 or through EMA website at Search for Licensed Workers.

Ensure that piped gas appliance is certified 'Safe for Use'

When a piped gas appliance is installed, repaired or replaced, it is mandatory for a licensed gas service worker or licensed gas service worker (restricted) to carry out a test on the piped gas appliance to ensure that it is safe for use.

After successful completion of the test, the licensed worker will issue a written statement to you certifying that the gas appliance has been tested and is safe for use.

  • Do keep all combustible materials away from gas cookers
  • Do open all windows while cooking

Precautions to Protect Gas Pipes During Renovation Works

When you want to carry out renovation works in your premises, you are advised to take the following precautions:-

  • Firstly, you would have to ensure that any alteration work in your premises carried out by you or your renovation contractor will not and does not damage any concealed service piping such as gas pipes in your premises and cause a gas leak.
  • You would need to ascertain the location of the concealed gas pipes prior to carrying out any work such as drilling, nailing and hacking on your walls. You can locate the concealed gas pipes, wiring and other services in the wall using a metal detector.
  • If you wish to install, alter or repair any gas pipe or gas appliance, ensure that a licensed gas service worker is engaged to carry out the work.
  • As a precautionary measure, you may request City Gas Pte Ltd to temporarily cut off the town gas supply to your premises during the period of the renovation work. You can arrange with City Gas Pte Ltd to turn on the town gas supply to your premises after the completion of the renovation work. City Gas Pte Ltd will check that the gas installation is safe before turning on the gas supply. For more information, you may call City Gas Pte Ltd at Tel: 1800 752 1800.
  • If you decide not to turn off your town gas supply during the renovation period, you are advised to conduct regular checks to ensure that there is no gas leak or a smell of the town gas in your premises.
  • At the end of each day when renovation work is in progress, turn off all gas appliances and check that the meter is not registering any usage of gas. If the meter is still ticking, there is likely to be a gas leak. Turn off the gas control valve at the gas meter. Refer to your licensed gas service worker immediately.
