Since February 2014, about 260,000 users of SP Services' (SPS) My Utilities portal have been able to compare their electricity consumption against the average consumption of their neighbours living in similar housing types. They are also able to compare their own usage against the national average.
The aim of this initiative, a pilot by SPS and EMA, is to increase consumers' awareness of their energy consumption patterns and encourage energy saving habits. With such information at the click of a mouse, it is hoped that consumers will reduce their electricity usage over time.
The initiative has been well-received by consumers, who find the comparison data useful in encouraging them to reduce consumption and adopt paperless bills.
In the coming months, SPS will be enhancing the portal with additional features and making this service available through other channels such as mobile apps.
So what's next?
With feedback from this pilot, EMA and SPS will work on redesigning the utilities bill sent to all 1.2 million households.
Other enhancements in the pipeline to provide consumers with more information to better manage their energy use include releasing data for consumers to make comparisons of gas and water consumption.
