Today, about 95% of our electricity is generated using imported natural gas. As a small country with limited natural resources, there are limitations on how we can deploy renewable energy sources including solar. Hence, natural gas will remain a key fuel source while we find ways to scale up renewable energy deployment.

How is the Government helping you?

• Launched in 2013, Singapore’s LNG Terminal imports natural gas from around the world. This has helped in diversifying our sources of natural gas and enhancing our energy security.
• The Genco Energy Efficiency Grant by EMA encourages power generation companies (gencos) to invest in energy efficiency equipment to reduce carbon emissions. Four gencos have been awarded $37 million in grants, where the supported projects are expected to reduce carbon emissions by over 48 kilo tonnes per annum.
• EMA launched an incentive scheme for advanced Combined Cycle Gas Turbines (CCGTs). This initiative is meant to encourage gencos to adopt new and more efficient advanced CCGTs to improve their efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.
