- Energy demand is on the rise and energy efficiency innovations could reduce households’ energy consumption and help support environmental sustainability. UP Singapore, together with the Energy Market Authority (EMA) and Singapore Power have come together to hold an Energy Efficiency for Everyone (E3) Hackathon. The E3 Hackathon aims to encourage sustainable energy consumption and energy efficiency in Singapore. The Hackathon will be held from 27 to 29 September 2013 at *SCAPE. The Challenge: To create apps that encourage energy efficiency and conservation in Households
- In Singapore, about 16% of all our electricity generated is consumed within homes. The E3 Hackathon will harness the power of crowd-sourcing to innovate mobile applications or web-based prototypes and solutions that promote energy efficiency and reduce energy consumption in homes. Such prototype applications could spark behavioral changes by:
- Increasing awareness on energy issues and ways to be energy efficient.
- Encouraging actions to reduce one’s energy usage and carbon footprint e.g. reducing the use of the air-conditioner.
- Motivating users to adopt energy conservation habits via peer motivation e.g. by enabling them to compare their energy usage with friends and family.
- Ciaran Lyons, Partner, UP Singapore said, “Participants at the E3 Hackathon will be given an exclusive opportunity to work with electricity and gas datasets. These datasets are the largest and most detailed ever made available for a hackathon in Singapore. Participants will also be able to leverage the big data processing tools from Amazon Web Services and SAP, and we're encouraging teams to combine Bluetooth sensors and other smart technologies with the data available to create truly innovative solutions that empower individuals to conserve energy.” From paper to prototype in 3 days
- The E3 Hackathon will bring together developers, designers, energy experts, researchers, students and everyone who is passionate about energy efficiency. Participants will also receive guidance from energy and technology experts and mentors. Winning prototypes may have their applications developed for public use.

We are hopeful that this Hackathon will generate creative solutions, through offering an exciting platform for anyone with innovative ideas to develop their ideas with energy experts and technology partners.”
