Four Students Receive Inaugural Energy-Industry Scholarship

  1. The first recipients of the Energy-Industry Scholarship (EIS), which aims to develop and nurture talent for the Power sector, are:
    • Muhammad Rafiuddin Bin Samsudien (ITE Award)
    • Teo Wen Xuan (Polytechnic Award)
    • Noor Nashriyah Binte Jalil (Polytechnic Award)
    • Tay Wei Jia (University Award) 
  2. They will go on to join companies including Singapore LNG Corporation, Singapore Power and YTL PowerSeraya. The details on the scholars are in Annex A
  3. Noor Nashriyah Binte Jalil shared that "Engineering has always been known as a 'man's field'. I hope to prove to myself and society that women can do the job just as well, if not better." She is currently into her second year at Singapore Polytechnic pursuing a Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
  4. Also eager to join the Power sector is Tay Wei Jia, who said “Singapore has one of the most extensive, stable and reliable power systems in the world. Thus, I want to learn, work and progress with the best.” He is currently pursuing a degree in electrical engineering at the National University of Singapore.
  5. The next EIS application will open in December 2014 and will see participation from the seven major companies in the Power sector. The list of sponsoring organisations is in Annex B. Launched in January 2014, the EIS is Singapore's first dedicated scholarship to develop and nurture talent for the Power sector. It covers a student’s tuition fees and hostel fees, and also provides a monthly living allowance.
  6. The scholarship is open to Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents who are either commencing their studies, or have started on their programmes. Visit www.ema.gov.sg/eis for more information on this scholarship.
