Currently, a commercial or industrial (C&I) consumer with an average monthly electricity consumption of at least 4,000 kWh is eligible to become contestable. Contestable consumers can choose to buy electricity from electricity retailers or from the wholesale electricity market, instead of buying electricity from SP Services (SPS) at the regulated tariff.
From 1 July 2015, the Energy Market Authority (EMA) will lower the contestability threshold from 4,000 kWh to 2,000 kWh. With this initiative, 13,500 more accounts (or 10,000 C&I consumers) will be eligible to become contestable, an increase from the current 76,000 eligible accounts (or 23,000 C&I consumers).
Speaking on the benefits of being a contestable consumer is Mr Andrew Loke from Jason Holdings Limited who shared that, “The retail contestability initiative has empowered my company to source for the best deal available from the electricity retailers and allowed us to enjoy a lower fixed price than what we were getting from SP Services.”
EMA will notify all eligible consumers from November 2014. More information on the retail electricity market and contestability is available at www.MyPower.com.sg.
