- As part of the national movement to provide Singaporeans with opportunities to develop to their fullest potential, the Energy Market Authority today conferred 10 Singaporeans with the inaugural SkillsFuture Study Award for Power Sector. This Award aims to support early to mid-career Singaporeans in the industry who aspire to deepen their power engineering skills.
- Ms Low Yen Ling, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Education & Ministry of Trade and Industry, presented the awards to the 10 recipients at a presentation ceremony today. Each recipient will receive a bond-free award of $5,000 to defray out-of-pocket training expenses for engineering courses related to the Power Sector. The 10 recipients are listed in Annex A.
- Among them is 47-year-old Abdul Jamil Bin Muhammad, a senior technician with Senoko Energy. With the Study Award, he aspires to complete a Higher NITEC in Technology - Mechanical Engineering. This was once an inconceivable dream as he does not possess the minimum academic qualifications. Eventually, it was his sheer determination that enabled him to pass an interview and got him accepted into the course.
- Mr Abdul Jamil said: “I am indeed thankful that ITE took into consideration my 20 years of technical working experience in the Power sector. The Study Award allows me to finally enroll in the Higher NITEC in Technology - Mechanical Engineering course to deepen my skills. Thereafter, I am not intending to stop here and hope that I can go on to take up a diploma course at the Polytechnic. This will widen my knowledge and enable me to contribute more effectively at work."
- Another recipient, 45-year-old Alice Monica Teo, currently works as a manager at Cable Detection Services and Engineering Pte Ltd. She shared that when the SkillsFuture Study Award for Power Sector was announced, "I took it as a motivation to pursue a part-time diploma in power engineering. This training will be useful in helping me to qualify for a licence in cable detection work, which is a core function in my company".
- Heartened by the aspirations of these recipients, EMA Chief Executive Ng Wai Choong said: "We want to support Singaporeans who are keen to deepen their power engineering skills. The energy landscape is transforming rapidly, driven by technological developments and the rise of renewables. The SkillsFuture Study Award offers an invaluable opportunity for one to learn, stay relevant and contribute to the energy sector regardless of one’s starting point in life."
- Adding on, Union of Power and Gas Employees General Secretary Abdul Samad Bin Abdul Wahab stressed that "the Power sector is critical to Singapore’s economy. Our workforce must be equipped with the current skillsets to keep the lights on and gas flowing. We are pleased that the Government is taking a proactive approach to support Singaporeans in deepening their skills. We strongly encourage our union members to apply for this Award to further develop their potential".
