Six Youths Awarded Energy-Industry Scholarships

25 Oct 2017
Media Releases 25 Oct 2017
  1. Six engineering students have been awarded the Energy-Industry Scholarship (EIS) this year - the most accorded under the initiative, doubling last year's three recipients. The scholarships are intended to develop and nurture a pipeline of talent for the Power sector, and is open to Institute of Technical Education (ITE) and Polytechnic students.
  2. The six recipients are:

Keppel Infrastructure

  •  Mr Shawn Ang Zi Ming, 20

Senoko Energy

  •  Mr Muhammad Afiq Bin Azri, 19

 SP Group

  •  Mr Chew Chun Hong, 24
  • Ms Vera Lam Kai Ting, 18
  • Mr Lee Wen Xiang, 20
  • Ms Teo Mei Fang, 19

3. The students will join their respective sponsoring organisations after they complete their studies. More information on the scholars can be found in the Annex below.

4. Ms Teo Mei Fang, an Electrical and Electronic Engineering student at Singapore Polytechnic, said she was motivated to pursue engineering as a career because “I grew up in a family of engineers. My father and brother inspired me to pursue an engineering career and I want to prove that females can do this job well, if not better!”. She will join SP Group after she completes her course.

5. Fellow recipient and course mate Mr Lee Wen Xiang, who will also be joining SP Group, shared that his passion for power engineering started with his love for the Japanese anime series, Gundam. "I was intrigued by how the giant robots were powered and moved about. This fascination led to me taking up electrical engineering at the ITE then. I am glad I am able to continue my interest at the diploma level now, and secured a scholarship that is related to my course of study.”

6. Mr Muhammad Afiq Bin Azri, a Year 2 Electrical Engineering student at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, who is sponsored by Senoko Energy, said the scholarship "will provide me with a head start in terms of internship experience, as well as gaining early exposure to the workings of the Power sector. Being the eldest in a big family with four younger brothers, the EIS can help to reduce the financial load on my parents. It’s also good to know I am able to secure a job immediately after completing my National Service.”

7. The EIS is co-funded by the Government and Power sector companies. The scholarship covers recipients' tuition fees, monthly living allowances, and a one-time allowance to purchase study-related items such as computers and books. Both full-term and mid-term scholarships are available to Singapore citizens or permanent residents pursuing relevant engineering courses.

8. There are seven sponsoring organisations participating in the EIS. They are Keppel Infrastructure, Sembcorp Industries, Senoko Energy, Singapore LNG Corporation, SP Group, Tuas Power and YTL PowerSeraya. The next EIS cycle will open in December 2017 for applications. Visit www.poweringlives.gov.sg/scholarships-awards/students/eis for more information.
