Launch of Singapore's Inaugural International Energy Week

About 2,500 participants are expected to attend its week-long energy-themed events

3 November 2008, Singapore — The organisers of the inaugural International Energy Week (IEW) - Energy Market Authority (EMA) and the Energy Studies Institute – will launch the International Energy Week today at the Raffles City Convention Centre’s Stamford Ballroom. About 600 guests are expected to attend the IEW welcome dinner where Minister for Trade and Industry, Mr Lim Hng Kiang, is Guest of Honour who will officially launch the start of the week-long event. Its programme highlight will include a performance by Mr Hady Mirza, winner of the first Asian Idol and second Singapore Idol who will perform the IEW theme song, Your Life, My Life (Feel The Energy) specially composed by Cultural Medallion winner, Iskandar Ismail.

Mr Khoo Chin Hean, Chief Executive of the Energy Market Authority of Singapore said, “We are all very privileged to host the IEW in Singapore for the first time. We are indeed heartened by the tremendous support from the 30 private and 25 public organizations – our strategic partners which have put in much effort to help make the IEW a vision come true. The IEW offers a myriad of conferences, exhibitions, seminars, workshops and networking dinners over five days which we are certain that the 2,500 participants will have much to benefit from”.

About 400 local and foreign delegates are expected to attend the Singapore Energy Conference themed ‘Powering Cities of the Future’. One highly anticipated programme is the Singapore Energy Lecture to be delivered by Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew. Overall, the Singapore Energy Conference serves as a timely platform for international and regional policy-makers, academics and industry players in the energy sector to share their ideas and strategize energy options for the future.

Other Distinguished speakers include Mr Shri Kapil Sibal, the Honorable Indian Minister for Science and Technology and Minister for Earth Science; and Mr Malcolm Wicks who is the Special Representative of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on International Energy Issues.

The IEW will be held from 3 – 7 November 2008. The IEW is a week of energy events comprising of conferences, workshops, seminars, courses, site visits, exhibitions, launches and networking dinners. There are a total of 38 events during the week. Highlights include:

The Singapore Energy Conference, which will take place from 4-5 November 2008, is the flagship event of IEW. Policy-makers and industry leaders from Japan, North America, United Kingdom and Singapore will be speaking on sustainable energy sources and technology; risks and opportunities for businesses; and integrated energy solutions to achieve sustainability in cities in the light of rising global energy demand and climate change.
