Singapore – October 14, 2009 – A UN report states that Cities and urban areas are gaining an estimated 60 million people per year - over 1 million every week. In many developing countries cities are growing two or three times faster than the overall population.
Asia’s economic giants such as China and India are developing some of the world’s largest and densest cities. There are about 100 cities in China with more than 1 million inhabitants. The impact of global warming and rapid urbanisation is driving global policy makers to prioritise the environment. The urgency for existing and new cities to become fully sustainable is extremely important to ensure that the effects of climate change are reduced or reversed.
