Three Youths Awarded Energy-Industry Scholarships

29 Oct 2021
Media Releases 29 Oct 2021
  1. Three engineering students have been awarded this year’s Energy-Industry Scholarship (EIS)– a dedicated scholarship for the energy sector offered jointly by the Energy Market Authority (EMA) and industry partners (sponsoring organisations).
  2. The three recipients are Mr Bryan Low Zi Yao, Mr Muhammad Harith Bin Hidayat and Mr Wesley Wang Dinghong from Singapore Polytechnic. They will join their respective sponsoring organisations after completing their studies and National Service.
  3. Second year polytechnic student Mr Low had always been interested in Mathematics and Science, leading him to pursue a course in Mechatronics and Robotics. His motivation to apply for the EIS was the opportunity to work in power plants. He will be joining his sponsoring organisation, Keppel Merlimau Cogen. With climate change being a pressing concern, Mr Low shared his hopes of helping Singapore transition towards a cleaner and greener energy future.“Keppel will be a great place to jumpstart my career in the energy sector, given its vast years of experience. I hope to learn and contribute to Singapore in making power generation more sustainable,” he said.
  4. As for Mr Muhammad Harith, a second year Electrical and Electronic Engineering student, he developed his interest in electrical work from seeing his father carry out electrical works at home since young. Mr Muhammad Harith sees the growing importance of ensuring the stability of the power system, especially with increasing digitalisation and electrification of transport. He said, “Joining Senoko Energy will allow me to contribute to Singapore’s move towards a digitalised and more sustainable yet reliable energy sector. I look forward to embarking on an exciting career in the energy sector.”
  5. Mr Wang, the third EIS recipient, saw his passion for engineering and physics leading him to pursue a diploma in Aerospace Electronics. Having family members working in the energy sector inspired him to apply for the EIS, which Mr Wang saw as a great way for him to learn more about the sector as well. He said, “The COVID-19 pandemic brought about many changes to our lives. What has remained a constant is how the energy sector continues to keep our nation powered 24/7, even as we continue to fight the pandemic. I am thankful for the opportunity to join Tuas Power. This is a chance for me to give back to the community by ensuring power is continually supplied to everyone.”
  6. Inviting Clean Energy Companies as Sponsoring Organisations

  7. Launched in 2014, the EIS highlights EMA and industry’s commitment to build a strong pipeline of local talent to power Singapore’s critical infrastructure.
  8. Manpower capabilities will play an increasingly significant role as we pursue a path to decarbonise our energy sector under Singapore’s energy transition plan. To ensure that we build up an adequate manpower pipeline and a competent workforce to support our energy transition, companies from the clean energy sector are invited to be a sponsoring organisation for the EIS. Sunseap Group, a clean energy solutions provider in Singapore, has recently onboarded the EIS.
  9. Co-funded by EMA and industry, the EIS covers recipients’ tuition fees, monthly living allowance and a one-time allowance to purchase study-related items such as computers and books. Both full-term and mid-term scholarships are available to Singaporean citizens and permanent residents pursuing relevant engineering courses.
  10. Applications for the next EIS cycle will open in December 2021 and close in March 2022. Interested applicants can visit https://go.gov.sg/eis to submit their applications.
