- Youth@SIEW 2023 has brought together tertiary students, educators, and seasoned energy professionals to explore the latest energy trends and challenges. The annual event, held today as part of the Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW), is also a key platform that celebrates the achievements of emerging youth leaders in the energy sector.

- Four Ngee Ann Polytechnic engineering students have been awarded Energy-Industry Scholarships
- Seven individuals have been recognised as Energy Ambassadors
- Thirteen teams have been crowned winners of the Singapore Energy Grand Challenge 2023
- This year's EIS recipients—four promising engineering students—exemplify the exceptional talent nurtured through this dedicated scholarship programme. EIS is a collaborative effort between the Energy Market Authority (EMA) and industry partners. All four recipients hail from Ngee Ann Polytechnic. Brandon Teo, Muhammad Fahmi Bin Yusof and Mohamad Taufiq Bin Mohamad Yunos are pursuing Diplomas in Electrical Engineering, while Foo Dun Liang is working towards a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering. Upon completion of their studies and National Service, they will join YTL PowerSeraya, their sponsoring organisation. (Refer to Annex A for profiles of EIS recipients)
- Brandon, a Year 3 Electrical Engineering student, believes in the potential of technology to help increase energy efficiency and lower greenhouse gas emissions in the energy sector. He says, “I hope to use my experience and abilities to help in the creation and use of sustainable energy solutions. I am thrilled to contribute to making the globe more energy efficient.”
- For Fahmi, also a Year 3 Electrical Engineering student, an internship with a clean energy company prior to the award of the EIS, further developed his interest to work in the energy sector. "The energy system in Singapore is renowned for its stability and reliability. I am extremely excited to play a part in powering and creating a more sustainable Singapore."
- Launched in 2014, the EIS programme highlights EMA’s and the industry’s collective commitment to build a robust pipeline of local talent to power Singapore’s critical infrastructure. Additional information can be found at https://www.poweringlives.gov.sg/scholarships-awards/students/eis/.
- The EIS provides financial support covering recipients' tuition fees, monthly living allowance, and a one-time allowance to purchase study-related items such as computers and books. The programme offers both full-term and mid-term scholarships to Singapore citizens and permanent residents pursuing relevant engineering courses. The application window for the next EIS cycle will open in December 2023 and close in March 2024. Interested applicants are invited to visit https://go.gov.sg/eis to submit their applications.
- Seven passionate individuals have successfully completed the Energy Ambassador Programme (EAP) over two years. As part of EAP requirements, these individuals participated in at least five activities designed to nurture industry expertise and inspire their fellow students, such as Learning Journeys to energy facilities, Deep-Dive Sessions and Peer-to-Peer Sharing on energy topics and careers.
- These individuals stand as exemplary advocates of energy sustainability and inspirational catalysts for change. The seven Energy Ambassadors recognised at Youth@SIEW 2023 are:

- Levin Khor Ren Xiang, ITE College West (HNitec in Electrical Engineering)
- Low Heng Wai, Nanyang Technological University (Electrical and Electronics Engineering)
- Muhammad Syafiq Bin Mohamed Farid, ITE College West (HNitec in Electrical Engineering)
- Soh Jin Rong Ryan, Ngee Ann Polytechnic (Electrical Engineering)
- Tan Kee Yee, Singapore Institute of Technology (Electrical Power Engineering)
- Zaphia Arisha Binte Solomon Dona Jr, ITE College West (HNitec in Electrical Engineering)
- The EAP offers a unique platform aimed at encouraging youth-to-youth advocacy for the energy sector. Launched in 2018, the programme nurtures tertiary students driven by their passion to address energy-related issues and contribute to the energy sector. EMA works closely with Institutes of Higher Learning (IHLs), ranging from Institutes of Technical Education to polytechnics and universities, to identify suitable candidates for the programme. - The Singapore Energy Grand Challenge (SEGC) (Youth) offers students the chance to devise innovative solutions to address energy challenges. This year's competition featured an innovative twist to its Junior and Senior Categories, evolving from a Minecraft-based challenge to a social media-centric one for 2023.
- Participants were encouraged to create a captivating three-minute Instagram video that embodies the competition's challenge statement: "Envision a typical day in the year 2050, in a net zero world where sustainable practices are ingrained into daily routines. Showcase how individuals and communities use technology to minimise energy consumption and maximise clean energy utilisation in Singapore." SEGC (Youth) aims to inspire youth to become influential voices, driving positive change in the energy sector among their peers.
- This year's champions, first runners-up, and second runners-up in both the Junior and Senior Categories, will receive cash prizes of $1,500, $1,000, and $500, respectively. They are:
- Champion: Team Potato from Raffles Girls’ School (Secondary)
- First Runner-up: RGHIKers from Raffles Girls’ School (Secondary)
- Second Runner-up: Team SusTainability from School of Science and Technology, Singapore
- Champion: Carbon Knights from Holy Innocents’ High School
- First Runner-up: Barbie’s Eco Chic Collective from Nanyang Girls’ High School
- Second Runner-up: Team TBC from Raffles Girls’ School (Secondary)

- In its second edition, the SEGC (Youth) – Institutes of Higher Learning (IHL) category has forged partnerships with new industry collaborators EDP Renewables, Tuas Power and Univers. This collaboration equips students with hands-on opportunities to develop innovative solutions for real-life challenges faced by companies while providing valuable mentorship experiences. Winning teams for each of the three company-specific problem statements will be awarded up to $30,000 in cash prizes. Additionally, these successful teams will have the opportunity to secure internships with the participating companies, further enhancing their real-world insights and industry connections.

- In addition to the new competition format, SEGC (Youth) 2023 featured an "Audience's Favourite" category. Members of the public were invited to vote for the entry that best expressed their ideas for a low-carbon Singapore. This initiative sought to sustain continued engagement with the public and amplify the impact of sustainability initiatives among youth. The video with the most likes from each category has received a $100 cash prize.
- SEGC (Youth) has consistently garnered strong support among schools and students since its launch in 2020. To date, more than 1,200 students in over 350 teams have participated in the annual challenge. This year, the competition received 84 submissions in the Junior and Senior Categories and 24 submissions in the IHL category.
