Singapore and the International Energy Agency (IEA) will inaugurate the IEA Regional Cooperation Centre on 21 October 2024 at the 17th Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW). The Centre will be inaugurated by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong, Minister for Manpower and Second Minister for Trade and Industry Dr Tan See Leng, IEA Executive Director Dr Fatih Birol, IEA Governing Board Chairman Dr Anders Hoffmann, and IEA Chair of Standing Group of Global Energy Dialogue Ursula Borak.
First announced at the IEA’s 50th Anniversary celebrations in February 2024, the Centre’s establishment marks the IEA’s first office outside of its Paris headquarters. It will serve as a hub for the IEA’s activities and engagements in Southeast Asia and beyond.
The Centre will work with all countries in Southeast Asia and beyond to enhance energy security and accelerate clean energy transitions. The Centre will serve as a hub for the IEA’s activities and engagements in the region and beyond, providing policy guidance, technical assistance, and training and capacity building. The Centre will focus on scaling-up the deployment of renewables and other clean energy technologies, promoting cross-border power trade and improving access to finance for clean energy investment.
Singapore and the IEA have a long-standing history of collaboration. In 2016, Singapore joined the IEA as an Association Country. Since then, the Singapore-IEA Regional Training Hub has jointly trained more than 1,500 participants from over 35 countries through eight editions of its associated programme. SIEW 2024 also includes the eighth edition of the Singapore-IEA Ministerial Forum. The Forum this year will focus on the theme of “Unlocking Southeast Asia’s Decarbonisation Potential”.
Southeast Asia Energy Outlook 2024: The sixth edition of the IEA’s Southeast Asia Energy Outlook will also be launched during the Forum. It will explore the latest energy developments and trends in the region, whose influence over the global energy system is markedly increasing. It focuses on ASEAN countries: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Viet Nam. Energy markets have been turbulent since the publication of the last edition of this report in 2022. The period of geopolitical developments in 2022 has left an impact on Southeast Asia – a dynamic region experiencing strong economic growth that now needs to chart its energy future in a more uncertain environment. The Outlook features analysis of the challenges and the opportunities that lie ahead, based on the latest data across all fuels and technologies.
