Singapore's Energy Sector Welcomes Seven Youths Under the Energy-Industry Scholarship

22 Oct 2024
Media Releases 22 Oct 2024
  1. Seven engineering students have been awarded this year’s Energy-Industry Scholarship (EIS). The EIS is offered jointly by the Energy Market Authority (EMA) and sponsoring organisations, with the aim of supporting and nurturing young talent for the energy sector.
  2. The seven scholarship recipients will be attached to four energy companies upon completion of their studies and National Service (if applicable). The recipients and their respective sponsoring organisations are:
  3. Sponsoring Organisation Name of Scholar School
KMC O&M Pte. Ltd Mr Sreeram Rojin  Singapore Polytechnic
    Mr Tan Jun Heng, Travis
PacificLight Power Pte Ltd Mr Guan Lixiang
Singapore Power Limited Ms Chen Sze Yee
Mr Muhammad Shakir Bin Muhamad Shawaluddin Ngee Ann Polytechnic
Mr Muhammad Naim Jamal Bin Jamal Isyam
YTL PowerSeraya Pte. Limited Mr Muhammad Syafiq Bin Mohamed Farid
  4. The EIS welcomes students who are keen to make an impact in driving Singapore’s transition towards a more sustainable energy future. For instance, Chen Sze Yee, a Year 2 Electrical and Electronic Engineering student at Singapore Polytechnic, recognises the critical role energy plays in powering everyday life and is passionate about contributing to the sector. As the energy landscape evolves, she is excited to be part of the energy transition. “I believe that the energy sector offers a unique opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the world,” said Sze Yee.
  5. Muhammad Syafiq Bin Mohamed Farid, a Year 2 Electrical Engineering student at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, also developed a keen interest in the energy sector after his internship at a solar company, where he gained insights into the broader scope of the sector. “In addition to my internship, my stint as an Energy Ambassador allowed me to engage in meaningful conversations with key industry stakeholders. I am excited to be able to play my part in building the future of the energy industry,” said Syafiq.
  6. Launched in 2014, the EIS is part of EMA’s and the industry’s collective commitment to develop a pipeline of local talent to power Singapore’s critical infrastructure. The EIS covers tuition fees (as published by the Polytechnic for the relevant academic year), one-time allowance of $1,200 (to purchase items related to the course of study), and a monthly living allowance of $1,000.
  7. Workforce capabilities will play a significant role in the energy transition as Singapore decarbonises the energy sector. EMA will continue to work closely with the industry to ensure a strong manpower pipeline and competent workforce to support the energy transition.
