- The Energy Market Authority (EMA) has awarded Tuas Power Generation Pte Ltd (Tuas Power) the right to build, own and operate a new Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) generating unit. Tuas Power’s CCGT is expected to provide 670 megawatts (MW) in power generation capacity and be ready for commercial operations by December 2031. This follows a Request for Proposal (RFP) launched in April 2026 under EMA’s Centralised Process for new generation capacity to ensure sufficient power generation capacity to meet Singapore’s future electricity needs.
- Singapore’s electricity demand is expected to grow rapidly over the next several years, driven by strong economic growth, transport electrification, and the expansion of energy-intensive sectors such as semiconductor manufacturing and data centres. EMA’s projections indicate that peak electricity demand is expected to grow by between 2.4% and 4.8% annually over the next ten years. By 2031, peak demand is projected to reach between 9.6 gigawatt (GW) and 11.4 GW.
- Singapore requires new power generation capacity to meet the demand growth. With an installed capacity of 670 MW, Tuas Power’s new hydrogen-ready CCGT will be able to meet the electricity demand of up to about 1.2 million 4-room HDB households annually.
- Mr Puah Kok Keong, Chief Executive of EMA, said, “As Singapore’s electricity demand grows, planning ahead is critical. Tuas Power’s new CCGT will provide the capacity we need for the growth of energy-intensive sectors. The continued industry support for the RFPs launched under the Centralised Process reflects our shared commitment to safeguard Singapore’s energy security. These CCGTs powered by natural gas will provide reliable baseload power while we pursue diverse pathways to a cleaner energy future.”
